i. ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Size 50 x 70 cm
Script Diwani jali & diwani
Paper Ahar, acid free italian paper
Ink Schmincke, red madder & black
a. Main text:
In red: فالله خير حافظا
In black: وهو أرحم الراحمين
Which means “Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful.” 12:64 (Holy Quran)
b. Label:
The artwork label is written in the Diwani script. The text reads in both Jawi and Arabic:
“Ditulis tangan oleh Atiiqah murid Belaid Hamidi semoga Allah mengampuni mereka.”
كتبته عتيقة تلميذة بلعيد حميدي غفر الله لهما
ii. STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK
a. ARTWORK PHILOSOPHY
“The text is a reminder that Allah is the best protector as the verse contains the meaning “Allah is the best guardian and he is the most merciful of all”.
This verse tells the story of Prophet Yaacob a.s who suffered from severe sadness when he lost his son Prophet Yusuf a.s. Despite grieving for his son, he had the highest of trust that Allah will protect and provide for his son wherever he may be.
So in our context, living with the evolving situation of Covid-19 and the uncertainty that all of this will not end very soon, we will have to put our trust in Allah. While we are finding creative ways to survive and taking steps to protect ourselves by playing our part in wearing masks and practicing social distancing, we also believe that we are being taken care of by Allah the best protector”.
– A’tii Qah Suhaimi
b. COLOUR
The bold Red colour: to express the feeling of being loved by Allah as we are being protected.
The Black colour: to signify strength and as an assurance that we are always protected.
c. ARTWORK COMPOSITION
- The extension of the vertical strokes (like the letter Alif and Zho) above the boundaries of the paper to express the borderless and everlasting love and protection that we receive from Allah.
- The words “Wa huwa arhamur Rahimin” (He is the most merciful) is written above “Fallahu khairun hafiza” (Allah is the best Guardian) because His protection is a result of His mercy.
d. SIGNATURE & LABEL
The Artwork Label is written in both Jawi & Arabic.
Jawi: دتوليس تاڠن اوليه عتيقة موريد بلعيد حميدي سموݢ الله مڠمڤوني مريک
Arabic: كتبته عتيقة تلميذة بلعيد حميدي غفر الله لهما
The calligrapher incorporated her signature into the artwork by signing it inside the Nuqtoh.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
The most difficult part for me was deciding on a text that is within the scope of the project’s theme which took me weeks before I finally came to a decision to write this text.
Once the idea is set, the process of preparing the artwork becomes much easier as the goal is clear.
I enjoyed the most when I see my ideas and planning culminate into an artwork.”

b. Label:
The artwork label is written in the Maghribi script. The text reads in Jawi:

ii. STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK
a. ARTWORK PHILOSOPHY
“When I was told that I can write anything that I want as long as it is within the scope of the theme’s project, I was so happy. Usually for any artwork from past projects , I will discuss it with my teacher and decide on a text upon their recommendation.
So when my teacher told me that I have the liberty to choose whatever I want to write, Immediately I knew that I wanted to write it in Malay Language and in Jawi. I had Gurindam 12 in my mind, or even something by Munshi Abdullah, but finally I settled on a song because I want to write something lighthearted but meaningful, easy to understand and something that I can sing while I write.”
I chose to write the song Semoga Bahagia (May you achieve Happiness) composed by Encik Zubir Said – the very person who wrote Singapore’s national Anthem – in reflection of the Singaporean identity and how the the name Singapore follows us everywhere we go.
The lyrics of the song is in the Malay Language which is the main language that we use to communicate with our elders and our families. But because of our education and how we were brought up, many of us can also express ourselves comfortably in at least 2 or 3 other languages. That is also the reason why I chose to write in Jawi because to read it you need to know Malay but you also need to be able to identify Arabic letters so it reflects a certain degree of mastery of various languages.”
-Amirah Raimi
b. FAVOURITE TEXT
“I have 2 favourite verses from the song:
- The first verses is “Sama-sama maju ke hadapan” because it tells me to keep moving forward. However small my steps may be, even though people around me is moving fast, I still need to move forward. But the beauty of the verse is not about moving forward, it is about moving forward together, and to make sure everyone in the community is successful. We need to be able to get pass our differences, we need to be able to care each other, to ensure everyone move forward together.
- My second favourite verse from the song is “Rajinlah supaya berjaya” because it tells me to be able to succeed, I need to be hardworking, and cannot be lazy. I need to practise diligence in my life so that I can be successful. I am attracted to that verse because when I got to work everyday, I see my senior colleagues, people who are from the generation before me, they still work hard. They turn up everyday and lived their life diligently trying to provide their family. And to me, that is a big inspiration.
– Amirah Raimi
c. SCRIPT
“I settled with the Maghribi Mabsuth script, a Moroccon font, as a tribute to my teacher and my teacher’s teacher who is a Moroccon Master Calligrapher Syeikh Belaid Hamidi. His passion and dedication to teach calligraphy had impacted my teacher Ustazah Atii Qah Suhaimi so much that whenever you are in the room with both of them, they are so passionate about calligraphy. Their dedication to me is very inspiring and very rare.”
– Amirah Raimi
d. SIGNATURE & LABEL
The Artwork Label is written in Jawi:
Jawi: دتوليس تاڠن اوليه سيتي نور أميرة موريد کڤد عتيقة سحيمي أنق ملايو سيڠاڤورا
‘Ditulis tangan oleh Siti Nur Amirah murid kepada Atii Qah Suhaimi anak melayu Singapura’
“The artwork label is signed under the artwork as my respect to my teacher and all her contribution and her patience in teaching me” – Amirah
The calligrapher also incorporated her signature into the artwork by signing it below the title of the song “Semoga Bahagia”.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
The most difficult part was to find time and space. I had to squeeze time after work and on weekends which gave me so much pressure because if my writing is not up to the standard that it should be, then I will not be able to put it out for the public.
Also, when I am executing the final piece I need a lot of personal space. I even find it difficult to talk to people because I use up so much mental energy to focus on my writing.
For this, I am very thankful to my loved ones who were very understanding and gave me as much space as I need.

ii. STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK
a. ARTWORK PHILOSOPHY
“I wrote a poem written by Imam Abdullah bin Alawi Al-Haddad. The poem describes our good belief and trust in God and whatever that He had determined for us despite the tribulations and problems that may come our way. “
– Sarah Azman
b. FAVOURITE TEXT
“The two highlighted verses of the poem for me are the verse فكرك واختيارك دعهما وراك “fikrak wakhtiyarak da’huma warak” and لا يكثر همك ما قدر يكون “La Yakthur Hammuk Ma Quddir Yakun” which brings to the meaning of “Put your thoughts and your choices aside, and do not worry too much on what has been written for you”.
As humans, we are constantly worried that our plans may not go perfectly or we may encounter depressing problems throughout our lives. However, we tend to forget that our lives have been determined by god and he had planned the best for us. So Whenever i am overwhelmed by my own worries, this verse makes me feel safe and calm.”
– Sarah Azman
c. SCRIPT
“This artwork is written in the Diwani script which is a script used to write the Ottoman official decrees and edicts. In the olden days, the script cannot be used by everyone hence the elaborate feature and characteristics of the letters.”
– Sarah Azman
d. SIGNATURE & LABEL
The Artwork Label is written in Jawi:
Jawi: دتوليس تاڠن اوليه نور سارة موريد کڤد عتيقة سموݢ الله مڠمڤوني مريك
‘Ditulis tangan oleh Nur Sarah murid kepada Atii Qah, semoga Allah mengampuni mereka’
The calligrapher also incorporated her signature into the artwork by signing it below the label, in red colour.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
Having to decide a suitable text to write makes me anxious because I am not really sure what is the best text for me. So i just decided to write a text which is the closest to my heart. Whenever i feel tight or stressed, this poem always comes to mind and I wrote it to share it with everyone. With hopes that everyone will be able to feel calm while reading it too.
Time was a huge factor for me as I am juggling a full time job and part time schooling while trying to finish the artwork on time so that the marketing team can start working on the promotion so I will need to squeeze whatever time that I have.
But thanks to my wonderful fellow calligraphers who had helped me out and gave me time and trust.
The most enjoyable part for is that writing is a calming activity and this poem reminds me to be calm. So it is a double relaxing combo for me.”

ii. STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK
a. ARTWORK PHILOSOPHY
“In this artwork, Rahmah or mercy is illustrated through the words “Rahman” which means [the most gracious] and “Rahim” which means [the most merciful].
I hope by having this artwork hung on the wall, it will serve as a constant reminder of Allah’s mercy and protection, during this difficult period and for us to always have the intention to spread mercy and compassion in whatever that we do. For example, in our current situation of fighting Covid-19 together, we can display more compassion to our fellow Singaporean who may have been affected by the current situation.
This is because, in order for us to obtain Allah’s mercy in this world and the next, we must also show mercy to His creations.
I chose a minimalistic concept for this artwork because I wanted to highlight and give focus to the meaning of the text. This is reflected by the minimal text and ornaments which can be seen in the whole completed artwork.“
– Nasrullah
b. SCRIPT
“The artwork is written in the Diwani script which is usually known as a cursive script. However I kept the cursiveness to the minimum by enlarging the text so that it is easier to read.
.”
– Nasrullah

The calligrapher also incorporated his signature into the artwork by signing it below the artwork.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
To be honest, the most enjoyable part of writing would be when other people are able to appreciate the artwork and hang it on the wall of their homes or offices.
Besides that, I treasure the process of talking to people about the types of artwork they prefer. And as I was writing, I also looked forward to the point where the meaning of the artwork would be completed.

ii. STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK
a. ARTWORK PHILOSOPHY
“The text contains the meaning: “If God helps you, none can overcome you”.
This verse was chosen in tandem with the theme that was given which is the utilisation of art in overcoming adversity, so this artwork serves as a reminder to come back to Allah in times of crisis. For it is with him, that our misery be lifted.“

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
The difficulty to write the artwork arised even before deciding to go with this verse.
I had planned to write in diwani Jali in a rather challenging template. But after much contemplation and also committing a grave mistake while executing the final piece, I decided to change the text and script altogether.
This was also an inspiration which I got right after Maghrib prayer one fine day. It is as if there was a voice suggesting the change of verse and script.
The most enjoyable moment is that it gives me strength spiritually everytime i read it.

I chose this text because I feel like during this period of time there are many uncertainties. But Allah knows everything and all of our affairs, so entrusting them to Him is the key in living our lives.
– Muhammad Hafiz
b. ARTWORK PHILOSOPHY
“Most of the words here are written in black ink, to signify the uncertainties that we are experiencing during this pandemic. The writings are arranged in a circle shape to signify that Allah has everything under his control, thus the word Allah is written above the circle, overseeing everything, including our affairs and fates.”
“The word Allah is written in red, to signify that He is our torch that illuminates our dark paths.”
– Muhammad Hafiz
b. SCRIPT
The artwork is written in Diwani Jali script.
c. SIGNATURE & LABEL
The Artwork Label is written in Jawi:
Jawi: دتوليس تاڠن أوليه حافظ رزالي أنق موريد کڤد عتيقة سحيمي سموݢ الله مڠمڤوني مريك
“Ditulis tangan oleh Hafiz Razali anak murid kepada Atii Qah Suhaimi semoga Allah mengampuni mereka”
The calligrapher also incorporated his signature into the artwork by signing it inside the artwork.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
Writing Diwani Jali script can be quite challenging when it comes to arranging the words inside a specific shape. This particular artwork took me over twenty drafts to finally get the best result.
The most enjoyable part for me was the final process in writing the artwork which is touching up. I love how it satisfies me to finally be able to complete the artwork.”
